An Introspective Introduction About Nothing

I say about nothing — simply because we haven’t met yet. In my native culture (Filipino) we bless our elders by gently placing the back of their hands to our foreheads as a sign of respect. Yes, I notice you unc, thank you for allowing me into your space. Fortunately, we don’t have to do that here. But if you were curious how Filipinos greet each other, that’s the only unique body language you typically won’t see Americans doing. Other than that, I’m open to daps, handshakes, hugs, and Italian inspired greetings.

My name is Marion. I’m an immigrant that moved to the United States just after my first loop around the sun. I came to Medium to get back into creative writing and to essentially journal my experiences and opinions. I used to write music back in my 20’s and it was a good way to release my emotions. I also found it rewarding when people consuming my work could relate to what I was saying. It often gave me peace-of-mind in situations that seemed impossible to get out of.

Currently, I’m attending grad school remotely at the University of Miami studying sport administration. I completed my bachelor’s degree in psychology at Nevada State College, and for the last 9 years I dedicated most of my time coaching middle school and high school basketball. My main priority as a coach was to help these student-athletes continue their education and athletics at the collegiate level. I managed their recruitment, academics, development, and social outreach all while teaching the game I love. Coaching is the main reason why I decided to get back into my own education. I’m passionate about sport and the impact it makes on people’s lives — yes, that includes the non-sports fan that is forced to pay revenue taxes for the construction of a stadium he or she will probably never step foot in. With this journey through grad school, I can only hope that it pays off with a lucrative position in sports. ‘Cause let me tell ya, this student loan debt I’m accruing? Might very well outlive me.

If you’re still here, let me get a hell yeah in the comments. If you’re into podcasts, click here! My cousins started a podcast a few years ago and it has grown to a profitable machine. They added me on in the summer of 2021 as a fact checker and 3rd member, and now I’ve been tasked with running the business’ operations and partnerships. We’ve reached new milestones which allows us to start scaling the business into possibly a sustainable stream of income. It’s comedic banter on real life topics that everybody experiences. I think that’s why its been successful thus far. Please check us out!

Consider this space an extension of my thoughts and my journey through life. I don’t sway too far from my center. What you see or hear is who I am. I’m levels away from perfect but I’m strong with my values. I back the underdogs and I advocate for equality. I’m learning as I go while I also teach as I leave. If you’re thinking about it, yes, you should take that day off for a mental health break. If you see yourself in a city that you’ve never been to, go make that your destination. Travel with an open mind and don’t be afraid to try new things. Take it from me. Don’t be afraid to love, and don’t forget to tell the people you love that you love them. I’m sure I’ll see you again, it was nice meeting you.
